Movement is an effective tool for older adults at risk for falls

Safe movement that increases self-awareness, like the Feldenkrais Method, continues to be an effective physiotherapy tool for older adults at higher risk for falls, neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive decline.

In a recently published systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials, results suggested that the Feldenkrais Method, is an effective physiotherapy approach: improvements in mobility and balance were seen in the elderly and people with neurodegenerative diseases.

At Together Senior Health, our Moving Together program uses a combined approach from the Feldenkrais Method and other movement therapies to support our participants in improving their balance, self-awareness, and confidence in movement. In a recent survey, 85% of our participants expressed that Moving Together would reduce falls for participants.

Conclusions of these studies suggested that the Feldenkrais Method “significantly improved gait, balance, mobility and quality of life,” along with “improved pain, functional balance, and perceived exertion,” in the elderly population.

One caregiver in our program shared this about their participant in our Moving Together program: “I’m grateful that he is discovering ways that he can move because he was convinced that he couldn’t move in certain ways. Now he can! I’m really grateful for that. I learned how many body parts we use to do certain things. I appreciate that kind of awareness.”
